Have any of you out there had similar experiences, or maybe met one of your musical heroes? I’d love to read about it. I learned much later that Ron Holloway played with Dizzie Gillespie, Root Boy Slim and Warren Haynes… just for starters. Have you played with many female singers?” He slowly lifted his gaze from his plate of food and said, “Well, if you count Susan Tedeschi, yes.” I walked up just as he took a big bite out of a meaty drumstick, and said, “Hey, I understand you and I are going to be jamming tonight. Hungry and tired, the sax player sat quietly in the corner with a plate of food on his lap. The band we were supposed to jam with that evening arrived late from another gig. I’ve performed with the Yarn Band…got to co-write songs with British pop star Nick Heyward (Haircut 100) and …without really knowing how revered they were.Īnother “OOPS” at a house concert I played a few years back… “The Accidental Artist” has unwittingly met a few other well known musicians: Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent Ralph Stanley, II up and coming Marcus King Sierra Hull Steep Canyon Rangers. I had no idea who they were but their lead singer, Vinny, was super nice too.

The band Carmine played with that night was Vanilla Fudge. I quickly snapped a photo of the guy and sent it to my bass player, saying “who is this guy?” He shot a text right back: “you goofball, that’s Carmine Appice! he played with Rod Stewart Ozzy Osbourne Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd…Man, I should be at that party, not you!” I said “thanks but no thanks on the singing…I don’t really know what I would sing.” He said “well, if you change your mind, come on up.”

He was super friendly and looked like a seasoned rocker with a full head of dyed jet black hair. Me: “Will I know anything you’ve played on?”Ĭarmine: “Possibly…hey, do you want to sing some thing with us? We’re getting ready to start playing again.” I had a similar experience with Classic Rock Hall of Fame drummer, Carmine Appice, whom I met at a house party just outside of NYC. I later learned that Steve Cropper is a world renowned guitarist songwriter and producer who co-wrote “Dock Of The Bay” with Otis Redding and played in Booker T & The M.G.’s He’s in Rolling Stone’s list of greatest guitarists of all time. Steve overheard us and laughed, saying, “it’s okay, I recently met one of those famous Nashville guys…”Brad or Blake somebody-or-other and I had no idea who he was…embarrassing as hell.” Matt: “JULIANA! That is Steve Cropper! He wrote that song we performed two hours ago.” I was like “Really? which one?” We spoke very briefly and at some point, my guitarist friend, Matt Backer, leaned in and said “You know who that is, right?”

Coming from a gig of my own, I arrived after he had gotten off stage so hadn’t seen him play. I once chatted briefly with a guy named “Steve” at a popular bar in Key West. I’ve met a few well known music icons and had absolutely no idea who they were. My epic lack of music education often creates amusing and slightly embarrassing situations. Marco Delmar, who produced my first CD, often jokingly refers to me as his “Accidental Artist.” When I first met him, I had no idea what I was doing with my music and he marveled at my dumb luck.
